This is perhaps the only (Salil) movie with 5 (or 6) lyricists, 4 of whom were dead long before the movie release :-) The lyricists are: Swami V, Jaidev, Kabir, Surdas, and Gulzar. I am somewhat confused with the 6th lyricist: Dr. PV Srinivas.  His name appears during casting at the start along with the other 5, but not listed in the credits that appear at the end of the movie.  I really have no idea who Dr. PV Srinivas is. Songs VN1 to VN3 are by Gulzar.  The third one is more Yogesh-style, which G is of course capable of too. In a recently released CD of Salil songs penned by Gulzar only all these three songs are included. The traditional bhajans (4-7) should be easy to guess, only if I had paid more attention to my hindi teacher :-)  So I have put my best guess, please have them checked by more knowledgeable people.
The CD and the cassette released by HMV in September 1998 lists Gulzar as the only lyricist !.
Salil always composed the background score of his films. Unfortunately his film was released after Salil's death and the background music was composed by Vijay Bhaskara Rao. Only other film where Salil did not compose the background music was the Bengali film Raat Bhore.
